Hard Surface Design with David Heidhoff (10 weeks)

Class: In the Hard Surface Design class, students will learn how to design believable mechs, vehicles, and weapons. This is a great class for artists that want to learn more about sci-fi industrial design We will start with some perspective exercises, studies from references, and quick sketches before moving into finished drawings and renderings.

Topics covered:

  • Design process and principles

  • Building a Visual Library/Styleguides/Reference gathering

  • Drawing techniques, lighting, rendering, perspective

  • Design tools, workflow optimization and “hacks” (Sideviews, 3D, transformation, smudge tool, custom shapes, stamps, etc)

Material List: Paper and Pencil/Pen, Laptop with Photoshop (not required but recommended)

Time/Day: Tuesday 7-10pm

Instructor: Born and raised in Germany, David Heidhoff developed a strong visual library reading, watching movies, visiting museums and traveling Europe and around the globe. The result, a fascination for world building, soon lead him to a career in concept art. David has contributed to a variety of projects in feature film and games.
